WEBSITE
Apologies that our website was down over much of the Christmas period. This
was due to server problems beyond our control.
SURREY COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday 3rd January at Lloyd Park, Croydon.
This Saturday, but entries have already closed. Timetable and maps:.
SURREY LEAGUES Saturday 10th January
Saturday week sees the third League fixture for both our men's and women's
teams. We need, as ever, a strong turnout to make sure of maintaining our
League position. The women's race starts at 12 noon on Wimbledon Common
while the men are on Streatham Common at 2.30pm - note the earlier start
time. Register on the day. Junior races follow the women's event and precede
the men's. More details will follow and will be shown on our website.
However, it's worth noting that for the women at the Roehampton Vale side of
Wimbledon Common there will be no on-site parking owing to other events
taking place there. It's suggested that we use the ASDA Roehampton
Superstore (SW15 3DT).
THURSDAY NIGHT TRACK TRAINING AT OSTERLEY
The club will be subsidising track sessions on Thursday evenings at the
Osterley track. All groups and all abilities are welcome! The sessions will
run for three months from 8th January 2015, every Thursday 7.30-8.30pm.
Link to the map is here:.
QUIZ NIGHT
We'll be holding one of our popular quiz nights in the clubhouse on Saturday
7th February, starting at 7pm. It's teams of four, make up your own team or
just turn up on the night. Cost is £10 to include a fish and chip supper.
Put the date in your diary and let Andy Hayward
andrewhayward@catalinare.com know if you're planning to come.
RIVER THAMES SPRING HALF MARATHON
Roy Reeder of Stragglers writes:
"I organised the River Thames Half Marathon in October and it went so well
that I'm organising a Spring version on 15th March 2015. Start is in
Walton-on-Thames and a fair bit of the route is along the towpath, so it's
scenic. I'm offering £4 off the entry fee to Ranelagh runners till 15th
January. Use the entry code RANonly4 at the Sport Systems store. Full
details here:.

WHAT'S HAPPENED
***************
HENTY RELAY Saturday 27th December in Richmond Park
As the clock in the clubhouse ticked round to the advertised check-in
deadline of 11.30am, it began to look as if the officials would outnumber
the runners. However, over the next half hour, enough trickled in to make up
eight teams - just enough for a decent race, though more teams would ramp up
the excitement a bit. For those unfamiliar with the event, it's held over
six laps of Sidmouth Wood, which is 1.38 miles round. Teams comprise three
runners, one from each of three categories - laughingly referred to as
"fast", "medium" and "slow", though the distinction between them is hazy to
say the least. Ken's fiendish computer program then does its best to produce
as balanced teams as possible. But of course, the poor thing is on to a
loser from the start, with such a wide range of abilities between the
fastest and the slowest in each category.
It's up to each team to marshal its resources as it sees fit. The
traditional optimum running order is fast, medium, fast, slow, medium, fast,
but this time only three of the teams opted for it. Two went for slow, fast,
medium, fast, medium, fast, two decided on medium, fast, slow, fast, medium,
fast, and the last one went for fast, slow, medium, fast, medium, fast. Two
of the teams that eventually finished in the top three put their "slow"
runner first, so maybe there's a lesson to be learnt there.
Jordan Mungovan was to be the fastest man on the day, but he didn't run the
slightly shorter opening stage which was led home by Mark Herbert in 7.41.
Over a minute passed before Chris Sinclair - not related to the main
Sinclair clan who were also out in force today - handed over in second
place, with young Euan Sinclair hot on his heels. Last two home were Mark
and Louise Roper, but Mark handed over to Jordan Mungovan who lost no time
in charging through to take the lead with the day's fastest time of 7.32. He
beat Trevor Maguire to the line by a single second, but that was the closest
any rival was to come to Jordan's team. Clive Naish on stage 3 consolidated
their lead, Jordan put in two more laps almost as fast as his first with
another solid stage from Clive in between.
Mark Herbert's team had never been lower than 4th and Mark finally brought
them home 2nd exactly a minute behind Jordan. Michael Dorgan was the only
other man besides Jordan and Mark to run a lap inside 8 minutes and his team
placed 3rd. As already noted, Jordan ran the fastest time of the day. Best
"medium" was Alistair Sinclair who ran 9.56 on the shorter opening stage,
while the quickest "slow" - also on the first stage - was Jar O'Brien's
10.11. Fastest woman was Sue Sinclair on 10.44. It was good to see half a
dozen juniors taking part - well done to Euan, Finlay and Eilidh Sinclair,
Luke Maguire and Frida and Astrid Roper.
