*************************************************** RANELAGH HARRIERS E-NEWS # 364 17 November 2011 Editor: Steve Rowland mailto: steverowland@ranelagh-harriers.com *************************************************** HEADLINE NEWS ************* * Ranelagh men finish 8th in the Surrey League but place 5th overall * Phil Killingley leads the team in third place, Mark Herbert wins the anchor trophy * parkrun placings for Darryl McDonald, Michelle Davies and Trevor Maguire * Everyone needed for two mob matches in two weeks * London Marathon club places up for grabs * Still time to book for the club Christmas Party on Saturday December 10th at the Richmond Hill Hotel SEE HERE ******** MOB MATCHES As usual, it's all hands on deck for upcoming mob matches. We have two in two weeks - this Saturday (November 19th) it's away to Thames Hare and Hounds on Wimbledon Common, and the week after (November 26th) it's at home in Richmond Park against Blackheath and Bromley Harriers & AC. Everyone is encouraged to take part in mob matches - the more starters we have, the better our chance of victory. If a hard race doesn't fit in with your training plans, just take it as a training run - it's the number of bodies on the starting line that's the important thing. The distance for both is 7.5miles / 12km. The Thames match is on their course on Wimbledon Common, starting at 2.30pm. Thames's bit of Wimbledon Common is on the west side, with car parking and their club HQ a couple of hundred metres up the A3 from Richmond Park's Robin Hood Gate. More details on our website here:. Parking is limited but space can also usually be found in nearby side roads. There is always a convivial and entertaining supper after the Thames match - it's probably going to be at the Telegraph pub on Putney Heath, to be confirmed on the day. All welcome. The following week on the 26th November, we host Blackheath & Bromley HAC on our own course in Richmond Park for the Pelling-Ratcliff Cup. This race doubles as our club championship for the Wynne Cup and there is a sealed handicap. Again, everyone is welcome and if we can outnumber the 'heathens we stand a good chance of winning the cup. Start time is 2.30pm. Please come and do your bit! SURREY LADIES LEAGUE The second League race for our women's team takes place on Saturday 3rd December. It's at home in Richmond Park and we need a good result after finishing 12th in the opening fixture. The senior race starts at 12 noon, followed by the junior races. RANELAGH CHRISTMAS PARTY Saturday 10th December 2011 from 7pm at the Richmond Hill Hotel. There's still time to book for the social event of the year! Cost: £42 for members, £44 for guests to include three-course dinner, wine and a DJ. You will need to give your choice of food on booking with Michele Gibson. Here's a link to the menu in the Richmond Hill brochure (see page 4) Details:. There will also be menu choice sheets at the clubhouse for you to complete with your booking. Contact Michele Gibson micheleagibson@hotmail.com for more details or to reserve your place (or text 07703 518956). LONDON MARATHON CLUB PLACES If you were unsuccessful in the ballot for the 2012 London Marathon you may be eligible for one of Ranelagh's guaranteed club places. We were allocated four spots this year, but one of these is already spoken for following a mix-up with the documentation for the 2011 race. So we'll be holding our own ballot for the three remaining places at the Christmas Party on December 10th. To be eligible you need to have taken part in at least two mob matches in the past twelve months, or else to have run one mob match and also helped as a volunteer at two club events. The two forthcoming mob matches will count. If you qualify send your name in to Louise Piears louise.piears@goodrunguide.co.uk before the Christmas Party. So far, Louise has not received many applications, so the odds are good! MCLEOD CUP & PERFORMANCE TROPHY These two competitions - for men and women respectively - are based on points scored in all club events during the winter season. Leader thus far in the men's competition is Chris Bundhun with 389 points out of a possible 400. Trevor Maguire (374), Chris Camacho (328), Steve Rowland (305) and Peter Fordham (299) are chasing. 64 names appear on the scoreboard. In the women's competition it's Kate Woodhouse who is leading with 298 points out of a possible 300. Lara Werrett (293), Sonia Rowland (283), Heather Martingell (283) and Marie Synnott-Wells (200) follow, and 24 members have registered points so far. Full details and rules:. THE ONCE AND FUTURE WAY TO RUN Darryl McDonald sends the following interesting link:. SWLAN NEWS Kate Brook provides details of forthcoming SWLAN events. They are free (except First Aid which is £10). Booking is essential (except for the K&P training talks, which are open to all). Please email Kate kate.brook@swlan.org.uk or phone her on 07973569543. At the end of this month, I'll be attempting the Antarctic Ice Marathon, near the South Pole, one of the world's driest and most inhospitable environments. The event comprises 26.2 miles of treacherous snow and ice at an altitude of approx. 3,000 ft. I'll be running in sub-zero temperatures on an active glacier, not to mention the potential bone chilling Katabatic winds that can bring the windchill temperature to -30C. Only 100 people have ever completed this mammoth event (fewer than 14 women). This year's race will be especially significant as it marks the hundred years anniversary of man first reaching the South Pole. Why? Every year people in Africa spend over 40 billion hours walking to get water. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. 90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are of children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, keeping them from school and work and putting them at risk. charity: water is a brilliant charity....they passionately believe that technology can make the world more efficient. Using the best of digital technology and social media they are aiming to raise $2bn in 10 years. Backed by many tech entrepreneurs, charity: water has a lean start-up mentality and has a separate operating budget from their founders which means that 100% of everything raised will go straight to building water projects in the field, even the credit card fees. Then, when the projects are complete, charity: water will show us just where they are and who they're helping (with GPS coordinates, photos and other details). We'll be able to see the communities we've impacted. Please donate here: mycharitywater.org/icemarathon If by any chance you feel able to donate $5,000 or more, it would be massively appreciated and you'll be able to fund a dedicated water well and you'll get your name on a plaque in that village. Any amount will help immensely and will also help to motivate me in what's going to be a somewhat challenging event." MISSING PEOPLE CHARITY Karen Weir writes: "I am giving my time to the Missing People Charity to support their runners in the London Marathon next year. There are still some charity places available for anyone that missed out on a ballot place. Equally, if anyone has their own place and would like to raise money for the charity they will get access to my training programmes, workshops and general support. Missing People offers a lifeline for the estimated 250,000 people who run away and go missing each year. For those left behind they provide specialised support to ease the heartache and confusion, and help search for missing loved ones. Please visit the Missing People website Chrissy@missingpeople.org.uk." WHAT'S HAPPENED *************** 2XU SURREY LEAGUE DIVISION 1 Saturday 12th November at Ham Lands After finishing fourth in the opening Surrey League fixture, to see us occupying eighth out of nine this time looks, on the face of it, a little disappointing. But dig deeper and there are certainly grounds for optimism. We were without Richard Gregory, who ran with such bravado to finish 5th in the first race. Richard was there supporting the team but a hip injury kept him out of the action. Had he been able to run we would have been 5th, such is the tightness of the team scoring between 3rd and 8th. We had only three finishers in the top forty, but we packed in twelve runners within about two minutes of our fourth man Carl Hammer. Many of that twelve have the capability of moving up the field and we'll look forward to seeing them do just that in the next race at Coulsdon in the New Year. The venue at Ham Fields has the advantage of plenty of parking space and luxurious changing facilities but the course itself is flat and, it must be said, a little dull. Nevertheless it is sure to have become one of Phil Killingley's favourite courses from now on after an outstanding run today. Phil showed impressive pace to hold off a pursuing pack and finished 3rd, his best ever Division 1 result. Jackson Creegan improved by a dozen places from his first League race and crossed the line 25th, less than a minute down on Phil. Another minute back was Darryl McDonald, a valuable 39th on his return from injury. League debutant Carl Hammer was 78th with Marc Snaith showing better form right on his shoulder. Chris Bundhun, Trevor Maguire and John Shaw crossed the line almost together in 87th, 88th and 89th places, Ted Mockett was 97th and Mark Herbert, making the scoring ten for the first time, was the recipient of the "Anchor Man" trophy in 102nd place. Another debutant, Louis Randall, followed Mark in, pursued by Peter Faull, Paul Doyle, Al Morgan, Andy Bickerstaff and the rest of the men in blue. We finished eighth on the day, but only 40 points down on South London Harriers in fourth place. Overall we dropped one place to fifth but only 73 points separate us from Clapham Chasers in eighth. At the top of the pile Herne Hill put in another dominating performance and already look certain to take the League title. Thames Hare and Hounds have had to settle for an isolated second. Dorking are trailed off a little at the foot of the table but between them and Thames there is everything to play for to determine positions three to eight. We had 27 starters - including Iain Wilson who happened to be passing on a training run and was promptly pressed into action! Once again this was more than any other club managed, with the exception of Herne Hill who matched our total. Weight of numbers gave us an advantage in the unofficial B team competition with Stragglers, and we scored 1269 to their 1391. Overall this gives us the lead by 2416 points to 2754. Alex Fordham appears to be the only under 20 to have finished both League races to date, so he has only to complete the last two to guarantee securing the individual U20 League title, just as he did in Division 2 last year.
